Der schwedische Naturforscher und Lieblings-Schüler von Linné bereiste 1875-76 Japan, er gehört neben Kämpffer und Sieboldt zu den wichtigsten Vorläufern in der wissenschaftlich Erschließung Japans. "Thunberg's first major work after returning to Sweden was Flora japonica (1784), a fundamental account of the floristics and systematics of the vegatation of Japan that describes twenty-one new genera and several hundred new species. His only predecessor of any importance was Engelbert Kämpffer." (DSB)
