Erste englische Ausgabe, zunächst aus dem Dänischen ins Französische übersetzt. Erste umfangreiche Beschreibung Ägyptens von einem Europäer und damit die Bedeutenste vor der Description d l'Égypte . - Der dänische Marinekapitän Frederik Louis Norden (1708-42), zugleich ein begabter und gut ausgebildeter Zeichner, wurde 1737 von Christian VI. beauftragt, nach Ägypten zu reisen und die dortigen Monumente zu erkunden. Er verfolgte den Lauf des Nils südlich der ersten Stromschnellen und machte genaue Beobachtungen der Pyramiden. "He spent about a year in Egypt and was the first European to penetrate as far as Derr in Nubia and to publish descriptions of any Nubian temples" (Blackmer). - Die schönen Kupfer mit einem Porträt des Verfassers, zahlreichen Plänen und Karten, sowie Artefakten, Obelisken, Statuen, Tempelanlagen, Ansichten von Städten, Küsten, Landschaften etc. - Die Tafeln numeriert von 1-159; davon 140 u. 141 sowie 142 u. 143 jew. auf 1 Tafel und Nr. 7, 23, 27, 66 und 108 jew. auf zwei Tafeln.
