Wenige Tage nach Schillers Tod geschriebenes Billet an Eichstädt, der Goethes frisch erschienenes Werk Winkelmann und sein Jahrhundert rezensieren will. Erwähnt seine langwierige Krankheit.
"Ein Winkelmann liegt für Ew. Wohlgeb. bereit u. ist nur durch die Confusion, die mein Übel in alle meine Geschäfte bringt, zurückgeblieben. Ich wünsche diesem Buche eine gute Aufnahme, ich habe es in mehr als Einem Sinne erkämpfen müssen .."
Seit Anfang des Jahres ist Goethe wiederholt schwer krank gewesen (Lungenentzündung, Nierenkoliken), erst ab Mitte Mai besserte sich sein Befinden.
