Zweite Ausgabe, in nur etwa 750 Exemplaren gedruckt. "It contains a second preface by Newton and considerable additions, the chapters on the lunar theory and the theory of comets being much enlarged" (Babson). Enthält das wichtige Vorwort des Herausgebers Roger Cotes, in dem er die cartesianische Philosophie angreift und die Behauptung widerlegt, daß Newtons Anziehungstheorie eine causa occulta sei.

EINBAND: Zeitgenössischer Pappband. 24 : 19 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit gestochener Titelvignette, 1 gefalteten Kupfertafel und zahlreichen Holzschnitt-Diagrammen im Text. - KOLLATION: 14 Bll., 484 S., 4 Bll. - ZUSTAND: Titel und Widmung geringfügig fleckig, erste Lage alt im Bund verstärkt, Titel mit kl. Fehlstelle, 2 hinterl. Randeinrissen und leichten Knickspuren sowie verso mit an den Ecken mont. Newton-Porträt, 2 Bll. (O2 und O3) mit ergänzten Randausriß oben (Buchstabenverlust), sonst sauber und breitrandig. Einbd. mit Gebrauchsspuren, Rücken beschädigt. Innen schönes Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Titel mit eigenhändigen Besitzeintrag des Mineralogen, Topographen und Astronomen Johann Heinrich Lorenz Pansner aus Arnstadt (1777-1851). Er studierte in Jena, stand 1803 in russischen Diensten als Kartograph und Forscher, später wurde er Gründungsdirektor der Kaiserlichen Mineralogischen Gesellschaft und Professor in Sankt Petersburg. - Titel mit altem Gymnasial-Stempel (unleserlich).

Second edition, fundamentally revised and enlarged. With engr. title vignette, folding plate and numerous woodcut diagrams in text. Includes the celebrated attack of the editor Roger Cotes against Cartesian philosophy. Contemp. cardboards. 24 : 19 cm. - Title and dedication leaf slightly soiled, first quire strengthened in gutter, title with small defective spot and 2 backed marginal tears as well as with slight crease marks and mounted Newton portrait on verso (mounted at corners), 2 leaves (O2 and O3) with torn out spot at margin (affecting some letters, mended), old school stamp (unidentifiable) to title; otherwise clean and with wide margins. Binding with signs of wear, spine damaged. Inside, a beautiful copy with autograph inscription by the mineralogist, topographer and astronomer J. H. L. Pansner (1777-1851).(R)
