"The first edition of the Bible in Slavonic. Prepared under the auspices of Konstantin, Prince of Ostrog, in Volhynia, Russia. This prince obtained a copy of the manuscript Bible of Gennadius from Moscow .. He also collected other Mss. and brought together competent assistents from various quarters, with whose help he tested the Slavonic text by the Greek and sometimes by the Latin, and substituted modern expressions for those which were obsolete or unintelligible, and corrected errors .. The books are placed in the order customary in the Greek Church. The Apocrypha are mingled with the other books of the O. T., with the exception of 1, 2 and 3 Maccabees which occur in a separate section after Malachi." (Darlow/Moule)
Die sogenannte Ostroger Bibel wurde von der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche als einzige maßgebliche Übersetzung der heiligen Texte anerkannt, und alle sprachlichen Änderungen wurden bis gegen 1750 nur mit äußerster Zurückhaltung vorgenommen. Gedruckt wurde das große Werk von keinem geringeren als dem russischen Erstdrucker Ivan Fedorov, dessen typographische und kulturelle Tätigkeit großen Einfluß auf den ganzen ostslawischen Raum ausübte. Nach Moskau, Zabludów und Lemberg war Ostrog Fedorovs vierter Aufenthaltsort, wohin er auf Einladung Konstantins seine Druckertätigkeit verlegte. Hier enstand die berühmte Bibel, die - vergleichbar der Lutherbibel - sprachlich normierend wirkte und die Entwicklung des Kirchenslawischen entscheidend prägte. - Es sind zwei Druckvarianten bekannt, hier vorliegend die Variante B mit zweisprachig gedruckter Schlußbemerkung und Kolophon in Kirchenslawisch und Griechisch.

EINBAND: Zeitgenössischer brauner Ledereinband über Holzdeckeln auf 4 Bünden mit blindgeprägter Deckelbordüre und Einzelstempel auf den Rückenfeldern; mit zwei Messingschließen und Messing-Kanten- und tls. Eckbeschlägen. Folio. 32,5 : 21 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit Holzschnitt-Titelbordüre, Holzschnitt-Wappen auf dem Titel verso, zahlreichen Holzschnitt-Initialen und -Vignetten sowie Holzschnitt-Druckermarke am Ende. - KOLLATION: 628 nn. Bll. - 2 Spalten. 50 Zeilen. - ZUSTAND: Etw. fleckig (zu Beginn und am Ende deutlicher) und vereinz. wasserrandig, die letzten ca. 25 Bll. im Randbereich sporfleckig und meist alt angerändert oder hinterlegt (ohne Textverlust), ca. 12 Bll. zu Beginn ebenfalls mit Randhinterlegung; sonst nur vereinzelte, meist hinterl. kl. Randläsuren; 1 Bl. gelöst, Titel mit Einriß im Fußsteg und mittig etw. brüchig. Innengelenke leicht gelockert, Einband tls. etw. beschabt, Deckel am Fuß tls. mit kl. Läsuren, bewegl. Teile der Schließen verstärkt. - PROVENIENZ: Innendeckel mit alten kirchenslawischen Eintragungen (18./19. Jh.), auf der leeren Rückseite des letzten Textblatts mit Besitzvermerk einer altruss. Hand des 17./18. Jhs. - Seit mehreren Jahrzehnten in österreichischem Privatbesitz.

The first edition of the Bible in Slavonic, printed by the famous Russian printer Ivan Fedorov. Key work for the religious, linguistic, and cultural identity of Eastern Europe, and milestone in Slavic book printing. Very rare complete copy, here the variant B with the colophon in Greek and Slavonic dated August 12th 1581 and with Federov's device above (cf. Darlow/M.). With woodcut titleborder, woodcut coat of arms on title verso and very numerous woodcut vignettes and initials. Contemp. calf over wooden boards on 4 raised bands, boards with blindtooled border, spine with single stamp in the compartments. With 2 brass clasps, brass fittings et edges and 4 brass bosses. - Somewhat stained (stronger at beginning and end), here and there waterstaining, the last approx. 25 leaves with mould staining in the margins and mostly backed or remargined, (without loss of text), ca. 12 leaves at the beginning also with backed marginal defects; otherwise only occasional, mostly minor small marginal tears; 1 leaf detached, title with tear and somewhat brittle in the center. Inner joints slightly loosened, binding somewhat scraped in places, boards with small defects at edges, movable parts of the clasps reinforced. - Provenance: Front pastedown with Slavonic inscriptions from 18th/19th century, on the blank reverse page of the last text leaf with Slavonic ownership note from 17th/18th century. - In Austrian private ownership for several decades.
