Erste lateinische Ausgaben der ersten in Briefserien veröffentlichten mikrobiologischen Erkenntnisse Leeuwenhoeks.
Der niederländische Naturforscher und Mikrobiologe Leewenhoek (1632-1723) entdeckte mit selbst angefertigten Mikroskopen die roten Blutkörperchen, Einzeller, Bakterien, Stärkekörner, Spermien u. v. a. Der wissenschaftliche Autodidakt wird gemeinhin als "Vater der Mikrobiologie" bezeichnet. Er ist für seine Beiträge zur Etablierung der Mikrobiologie als wissenschaftliche Disziplin bekannt. "Leeuwenhoek was one of the first and greatest of the microbiologists" (Garrison/Morton 67).
Die Continuatio arcanorum naturae detectorum separat gebunden, die restlichen drei Werke in 1 Band. Alle 4 Teile enthalten zusammen die Briefe 28 bis 107 (vgl. Auflistung bei Wellcome). Die ersten 27 Briefe wurden zu seinen Lebzeiten nie separat veröffentlicht, so daß die ersten lateinischen Übersetzungen mit dem Brief 28 begannen.

With a total of 2 engr. frontisp., 1 engr. portrait, 55 engr. plates (of 56; some folded) and 116 text engravings. Contemp. vellum with handwritten title on spine and later vellum. Ca. 20 : 15.5 cm. - Lacking 1 plate in the "Anatomica". Some foxing, occasional water staining ("Continuatio arcanorum"), some plates with small annotations by an old hand at the upper margins, 1 flyleaf with a small corner tear, bindings somewhat rubbed, 1 front hinge slightly torn.
