Selbstbildnis mit Pfeife. Orig.-Bleistiftzeichnung. Monogrammiert unten rechts. Um 1920/21. Auf Werkpapier, auf dem Vortitel der Publikation "Das graphische Werk Max Pechsteins" von Paul Fechter. 26,9 : 19,3 cm.
Vorstudie für die in der Publikation von Paul Fechter lithographierten Zeichnung. Hier porträtiert sich Pechstein vor an den Strand rollende Wellen an seiner geliebten Ostsee-Küste.
1920 reist Pechstein das letzte mal nach Nidden an der Ostsee, nachdem der kleine Ort in Ostpreußen nach dem Versailler Vertrag unter die Verwaltung des neu gegründeten Völkerbunds an Litauen gefallen ist. 1921 wählt er dann das Küstenstädtchen Leba im damaligen Pommern als neues Sommerdomizil, gar zweites Zuhause, in das er bis 1945 regelmäßig zurückkehren wird.
Schon 1911 zeigt sich Pechstein in einem Selbstporträt in Tusche Pfeife rauchend und verwendet das Attribut bis zuletzt mehrfach für seine Selbstporträts in Gemälden, Aquarellen, Zeichnungen und Druckgrafiken. Einige Fotografien Hermann Max Pechsteins aus ganz verschiedenen Lebensabschnitten zeigen den Künstler ebenfalls Pfeife rauchend.

In this preliminary study for the drawing lithographed in Paul Fechter's publication, Pechstein portrays himself in front of waves rolling onto the beach on his beloved Baltic coast. - Browned due to paper, in the upper margin two lightened spots due to mounting traces on the back.
