"This, the first tract in English upon the determination of specific gravity, was written by Boyle the year before his death .. in modern parlance, the book is essentially a monograph devoted to a special branch of physics. The principle of weighing bodies in the air and in water dates from the time of Archimedes or probably earlier, but it was Boyle who first directed the attention of physicists and chemists to the importance of specific gravity" (Fulton).

First edition. One of Boyle's rarest books, written a year before his death. Contains the first English-language treatise on specific gravity. With engr. frontispiece. Contemp. calf with black-tooled cover fillets. 17 : 11 cm. - Somewhat browned and waterstained. Binding somewhat stained and rubbed, 2 quires misbound. From the estate of the Swedish merchant, amateur physician, and co-founder of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Marten Treiwald (1691-1747), with his signature on the title page, dated October 4, 1722.
