Wols
1913 - 1951
Tapis. 1940.
Watercolor and ink pen.
Signed and dated in the lower right. Inscribed "No. 116" and "Camp des Milles 1940" on the reverse. 32.8 x 26.7 cm (12.9 x 10.5 in), the full sheet. [KA].
• Reality and imagination merge compellingly in this early poetic-surrealist work.
• At the time of its creation, the German artist, who was living in France, was interned at Camp des Milles in Aix-en-Provence following the outbreak of war (1939/40) due to his origins, despite his anti-fascist stance.
• During his internment, he produced a large number of drawings and watercolors depicting camp life; many of these were lost in 1940 while he was fleeing to Dieulefit.
• Another work from this creative phase achieved the highest hammer price ever recorded for a Wols watercolor on the international auction market (source: Artprice).
• Comparable works from this period are held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Tate, London, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
Accompanied by a photograph certificate of authenticity issued by Dr. Ewald Rathke, Frankfurt am Main, dated April 2, 1988.
