Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
1884 - 1976

Sprießende Zwiebeln. 1951.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the upper right. Signed, titled, and inscribed ”((gewachst))” on the reverse of the stretcher. A fragment of the title is covered by a label. 65 x 73.5 cm (25.5 x 28.9 in). [CH].

• Exceptionally modern in color, composition, framing, and abstract background design.
• Still lifes play a central role in the artist’s oeuvre.
• In the 1950s, Schmidt-Rottluff’s painting experienced a new bloom, and he entered a new stylistic phase.
• Radiant magnificence: everyday objects are transformed into artistic events through the high-contrast, vivid presentation
.

The work is documented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, Berlin.

PROVENANCE: Galerie Günther Franke, Munich (1957, with a label on stretcher).
Private collection, Southern Germany (likely acquired directly from the above, in the family’s possession ever since).

EXHIBITION: Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Galerie Günther Franke, Munich, June 1 through mid-July 1957, no. 38 (leaflet).

LITERATURE: Will Grohmann, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Stuttgart 1956, p. 306.

“Built entirely on the effect of color, expressively heightened in its plasticity, all objects exist freely within the pictorial space, brought to a shimmering presence and power through their color aura. The contours no longer have the striking density they had in the previous decade, but now appear partially interrupted and irregular, thus developing a shimmering, dynamic autonomy."
Janina Dahlmanns, Zwiesprache mit der Kunst. Karl Schmidt-Rottluffs Stilleben, in: Magdalena M. Moeller, exhibition catalog, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Landschaft Figur Stilleben, Brücke-Museum, Berlin, Munich 2014, p. 138.

“I always wanted to reveal existence, the quiet life of things.”
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff in a letter to Gerhard Wietek, 1960, quoted from: exhibition catalog Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Landschaft, Figur, Stillleben, Brücke Museum, Berlin, Munich 2014, p. 128
