Erste Ausgabe. - "The essential part of the work consists of the beautiful plates, executed in lithography colored by hand from drawings by Schlegel, made from nature and as far as possible from life. The birds are figured in life-size, which accounts for the large format" (Anker). - "The general text, in Dutch, contains a description of each species with distribution, synonymy and other notes. The synopsis contains Latin diagnoses of the species. The plates are excellent and suggest the work of Joseph Wolf" (Zimmer). - Manche Exemplare haben noch eine zusätzliche unkolorierte Tafelfolge.

Probably the finest Dutch large color plate book on birds. First edition. With 17 lithogr. plates with bright contemp. coloring. The illustrations are made from nature and as far as possible from life. Contemp. half calf with some gilt tooling on spine. - Plates partly slightly brownstained in the white margins, front edge bumped, flying endleaves and first 3 text leaves with creases. Binding somewhat rubbed, corners slightly bumped.
