Marcus Vitruvius Pollio
I dieci libri dell'architettura tradutti et commentati da Monsignor Barbaro. Venedig, F. Marcolini 1556.
"The 1556 Venice Vitruvius is widely considered to be the most significant Italian edition of the treatise. This translation and commentary authoritatively renewed the Italian contribution to Vitruvian critical studies, expanded by Spanish, French, and German commentators in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, while the illustrations provided by Andrea Palladio, among others, are the most persuasive architectural illustrations associated with the Vitruvian text .. Barbaro's celebrated translation overshadowed all preceding editions." (Millard)
Die Holzschnitte zeigen u. a.
- KOLLATION: 274 (recte 284) S., 9 Bll. - ZUSTAND: Ohne den bewegl. Zeiger sowie 1 montierte Klappe (S. CXXV). - Teils etw. fingerfl., wasserrandig und stellenw. mit kleinen ausgebesserten Randläsuren, Titel gereinigt, wenige gewischte Tintenspuren, erste Lage angefalzt, letztes Blatt angerändert. Insgesamt breitrandiges und überwiegend gutes Exemplar.
LITERATUR: Ebhardt S, 71. - Millard Coll. 160. - Fowler 407 - Ciocognara 713. - Ornamentstich-Slg. Berlin 1814. - Mortimer, Italian Books 547.
First edition of Daniele Barbaro’s important translation, with the collaboration of Palladio, who also provided the designs for the woodcuts. With a woodcut title page and approximately 130 woodcuts, some of which are full-page or double-page in size; some are mounted or have flaps. 20th-century gilt- and blindstamped leather in contemp. style. 41 :27.5 cm. - Missing the movable pointer and one mounted flap (p. CXXV). - Partly slightly finger- and waterstained, here and there small marginal repairs; title page cleaned; a few smudged ink spots; first sheet inserted on guards; last leaf trimmed. Overall, a copy with wide margins and in mostly good condition.
