Daniel Richter was born in Eutin in 1962. In the 1980s, he designed posters and album covers for rock and punk bands and was active in Hamburg’s underground scene. From 1991 to 1995, he studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg under Werner Büttner. The unconventionality and cultural defiance that the circle of artists around Büttner, Albert Oehlen, and Martin Kippenberger made their guiding principle in the 1980s ultimately led Richter to painting. For a time, he worked as an assistant to Albert Oehlen (painting, object art, installation, and music), and to this day he remains in close contact with his fellow artists. Until the year 2000, his works were characterized by an intensive engagement with abstraction, which was, however, repeatedly interwoven with figurative elements. With an exceptionally reduced color palette, the large-format painting offered here draws the viewer into a vortex of overlapping forms and elements. It should be noted that only very few works in Daniel Richter’s body of work exhibit such a strict reduction of color values. Black, white, and gray seem to dominate at first glance, yet delicate shades of turquoise, pink, and purple are also present. The longer one stands before this dynamic composition—which consists of many highly geometric areas—the finer, smaller color nuances become apparent. As in a picture puzzle, forms step forward and recede, figures emerge and vanish. The whole piece resembles a highly condensed comic strip, whose density leaves us filled with curiosity and wonder.
