In winter 1923/24 Gabriele Münter stayed in Elmau for recreational purposes. This work is one of the portraits she made during the time there. She wrote abouth the days in Elmau: "I did not have a studio for years. In those days it was people that I was particularly fascinated by". As far as her style in this period is concerned, a certain orientation with New Objectivity can be observed.
