The "Reitende Amazone“ presumably is Franz von Stuck's most famous bronze and earned him great renown as a sculptor. Different from many his depictions of females, for which he used tender and sensual dancers or sinful temptresses, he picked up the type of the Amazon from Greek mythology in 1897. Stuck emphasized the spear throwing warrior's athletic expression more than her erotic aspects. Despite all nudity, she emanates power and pride in a very natural way. For the Amazon's embellished helmet Stuck used motifs from an ancient head of Athena that was part of his vast collection of ancient casts. Since 1936 a monumental version of the Amazon adorns the portico of the Villa Stuck, the artists residence and studio in Munich.
