Essay
The large-size lithograph "Die Heiligen Drei Könige" (Three Kings) is characterized by a strong spiritual originality. Emil Nolde shows particular mastery by making full use of the opportunities the printing technique has to offer for the benefit of the composition. Nolde renders the oriental air of the Three Kings in a magic contrast of light and shade. The last state's sparse coloring underlines the mythical intentions, particularly as far as the yellow part is conerned. The dense composition appears like a stage scene. Emil Nolde began to draw right on the stone at around the middle of the year 1913 and explored all the opportunities the lithography techniques had to offer on the spot, which also explains the large number of trial proofs and color variants. The irregular margins of the stone are to be understood as an additional aesthetic element of the composition. Owed to their irregularities, they are a significant feature of expressionist graphic art. [EH/JS]
