After her sojourns in Scandinavia, which were initially marked by the separation from Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter sought a new orientation, which at first she found in her straight-line portraits. Owed to her striking illustration of the depicted person they were soon met with recognition. But Münter tried to retrieve her previous achievements in painting. It was a phase of transition, of finding a new style. At that point Münter had not really found her true genre of motifs. The "Javanerkind" (Java Child) from these days may well be seen as proof of that. What makes this work so remarkable is how Münter integrates the slightly exotic motif – from her own perspective it does not really seem to be all that exotic – into the mountain landscape of her home region, entirely forgoing any reference to the depicted person‘s natural origin. The mountains in the background already hint at the new beginning. The landscape that Münter was surrounded by would become the key motif of the following period.
