Essay
Pablo Picasso made this drawing for the book "Le Visage de la Paix", released October 1951. It is the last book that Picasso illustrated for the poet Paul Eluard in their 15 years of cooperation. It was made on occasion of the 30th anniversary of the French Communist Party, which Picasso joined in 1944. The 29 illustrations show the convergence of a dove of peace and a female face. In the sequence of images both motifs become one. Our sheet is number 9 in the series and is a great document of Picasso's graphic gift. Metamorphoses of this type are recurrent in Picasso's oeuvre, however, this was the first time that he combined the motif of the dove with a female face. The lady depicted in our drawing is the painter Françoise Gilot, Pablo Picasso's partner between 1944 and 1953. In her painting "Les peintres" from 1952 she shows how Picasso presents a drawing from the series to two other painters. [EH]
