Essay
Soshana Afroyim was born by the name Susanne Schüller in Vienna. The Jewish family fled Nazi persecution and eventually settled in the USA. The family's gifted daughter attended several art schools and developed her independent style. Throughout her career the unresting artist made many stops in places all over the world, in 1957 she visited China. She said the following about this sojourn: "Trip to China in 1957 left a lasting influence on my work (..) I was taught the traditional Chinese painting technique on rice paper by an artist in Hangchow. When I returned to Paris I tried applying oils with a palette knife on canvas in a similar way and I continue to use this technique (quote from: Soshana in: Soshana, United Artists Ltd.,Tel Aviv 1973, p. 146.)
