The expressiveness of Henri Matisse's later, almost exclusively linear portrait drawings reflects the sum of the experiences the artist gained in the course of his artistic development. The formal reduction to the essence of the line is crucial for Matisse's quest for the pure line. The graphic element is dominant, fueled by his mastery, it does not require anything else. The soft brushstroke describes a portrait characterized by an expresssiveness that can entirely do without any accessories. In his late period of creation Henri Matisse created a unique and unmistakable topos in portrait art that is also reflected in his late graphic oeuvre, especially in his lithographs (cf. lithographs Matisse-Dutuit 640 and 641).
