Essay
Naples and the Vesuvius count among the most iconic motifs of classic landscape painting. The well-traveled painter Carl Wuttke was occupied with these subjects in ever new variations. Our picture shows the smoke emitting Vesuvius in the back and the Bay of Naples seen from a terrace above the coast. Wuttke went to Italy in August 1874 for the first time, visiting the northern part and Rome. Later Wuttke went further down south, according to his travel memoirs, published in 1925, he had developed a strong liking for the islands of Capri and Ischia as well as for the Bay of Naples. [FS]
