Magischer Realismus

The term Magic Realism was introduced by the art critic Franz Roh in his attempt to include the social- and time-critical tendency of Verism into the definition. Nowadays Magic Realism is regarded as a tendency of its own within New Objectivity.
Carl Grossberg (1894-1940), Franz Radziwill (1895-1983) and Georg Scholz (1890-1945) are considered main representatives of Magic Realism, which is characterized by a striking combination of realist and surrealist elements. Ingeniously composed rooms and peculiar phantasmagoric light effects that often emanate a demonic and threatening atmosphere are typical for Magic Realism. The subjects often relate to changes in the present reality, technology and machines make for a focus of magic realist painting.
Magic Realism lived on in art after 1945 and saw a great master in Konrad Klapheck.
