Minimal art
Minimal art is a movement embracing painting, sculpture and object art that emerged in the US in the early late 1950s and early 1960s as a backlash against the gestural painting espoused by Abstract Expressionism. Minimal art strives for objectivity, schematic clarity and inner logic as well as depersonalisation. Exponents of Minimal art reduce the object to stringently simplified, often geometrical shapes (primary structures). They work with industrial products such as metal tiles (Carl André), neon tubing (Dan Flavin) and steel frames (Donald Judd), which they also use serially. Or works of art are created by blowing up found objects to a vast scale (Ronald Bladen, Tony Smith). Other leading exponents of Minimal art are John McCracken, Sol LeWitt, Walter de Maria, Robert Morris, Larry Bell and Fred Sandback. Three-dimensional art is particularly important in Minimal art but it is also concerned in painting with reduction to essentials, with monochrome and geometric surfaces. James Rosenquist, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Jo Baer and Agnes Martin were forerunners of Minimal art in painting. The American art historian Richard Wollheim coined the term "Minimal art" in a 1965 essay entitled "Minimal Art" (Arts Magazine, January 1965). Also important for shaping the concept was the artist Donald Judd (a 1965 article in Arts Yearbook entitled "Specific Objects"). In his view, color should be given a sculptural form so that it could be more powerful and specific by virtue of being in space. "Staging" in space in this way would also exert a paramount influence on the development of the Post-Modern and Action art that followed on Minimalism. Minimal art is a specifically American art movement that sought to differentiate itself from European trends in art (particularly Constructivism and Concrete art). American Minimal art was first shown in Germany in 1969 in a touring exhibition that went to Düsseldorf and Berlin.
