Pencil drawing
Pencil, actually made of graphite, is a multipurpose tool for writing and drawing. The pencil provides draughtsmen especially with many modes of expression. Very fine lines can be produced in pencil, which is not possible with comparable drawing materials such as pastel chalks and charcoal. Working in pencil makes it possible to produce either fleeting sketches or meticulously executed, detailed drawings. Graphite is also used for tinting surfaces and for sketching: a thick stick of graphite mantled in foil. The pencil (gaphite pencil) has been used since the 16th century but the varying degrees of hardness known today were first produced in the late 18th century, which also led to an upturn in pencil drawing. Drawing in pencil was particularly popular in the Romantic period as well as among the members of the Nazarene school.
