The Viennese Secession
The Viennese Secession [German: Wiener Secession] was a group of artists who joined forces in protest against the Wiener Künstlerhaus. The seceding artists' protest was aimed at the prevailing traditionalism and conservative notions of art that were orientated towards Historicism. Modelling itself after the Munich Secession, the Viennese Secession was co-founded in 1897 by Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich and other dissenting artists. By 1898 the exhibition building designed by Olbrich was ready for use and that same year saw the first group show mounted by the Viennese Secession. It was not long before differences of opinion broke out among the members of the Viennese Secession. In 1905 Gustav Klimt and a group of artists left the Viennese Secession. The term Viennese Secession is also applied to the Viennese variant of Jugendstil/Art Nouveau.
