Works by Eugène Leroy, including this one from 1988, are particularly captivating for the almost haptic quality of the color application: thick crusts of oil paint and an abstract pattern of subtly synchronized shades. It is little surprising that the artist was deeply impressed by Rembrandt's famous "Jewish Bride", a picture that almost anticipated the flickering abstract effects of the pastose color application. From this path, which has its origin in Dutch Baroque, Leroy develops his remarkable oeuvre. An oeuvre so opulently changing between figuration and abstraction, that it is impossible to make it subject to any "-isms". The nearly meditative effect of the image's surface and the fascinating quality of the close-upview has an element of surprise at second glance: When intensively observing Leroy's painting, the hidden motif comes out, in the case of our work a greenish shimmering torso – as suggested by the title. The color patterns' extraordinary beauty attains a second meaning that also adds an unusual charm to "Torse vert".
