Signed in the right of the image. 65 : 44,5 cm (25,5 : 17,5 in). The British painter and illustrator Lady Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema is born in London in 1852. She is a student of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema as of 1871, whom she marries in the same year. The artist dedicates her genre scenes, in the style of the Dutch 17th century painters, to domestic scenes, of which many are childhood motifs in interiors with an ancient glory. She also paints portraits in pastel, small Italian landscapes and classical subjects. It is mainly her classical works, that are often mistaken for her husband's, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who is also her teacher, due to the stylistic relatedness. Laura Theresa's extremely fine and careful executed paintings become very popular. She exhibits in the Royal Academy as of 1873, and at the international exhibition in Paris in 1878. The British artist also participates regularly in German exhibitions as of 1881.

This painting is a good example of Lady Alma-Tadema's fine style, which were especially treasured in Germany. The artist received the gold medal for her paintings"Hush-a-bye" and "Zufriedengestellt" at the international art exhibition in Berlin in 1896. Even if the question, as to whether the latter may have been this painting, remains unanswered, she definitely proves to be a master of the material rendering and of a softly lucent lighting, which is quite characterictic for her paintings.

Besides dedicating herself to liberal arts, she also makes commercial art and works as an illustrator for "The English Illustrated Magazine". Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema dies in London in 1909. Her paintings are in possession of international museums, such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. [AS]
