The brilliant Vollard Suite remains one of Picasso’s outstanding achievements in the graphic arts. For its scope alone – it comprises ninety-seven etchings as well as the three later portraits of Vollard – it must be evaluated as a unique event in European modern printmaking, both for its outstanding artistic quality and the labour-intensive and time-consuming endeavour that produced it, not to mention the enormous quantity of material used.
