PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany.

Even in color pen drawings Ernst Ludwig Kirchner remained true to his mantra of always rendering a swift account of what is observed. By constricting himself to three colors, blue, brown and red, he managed to display the depicted person's most important character traits with sparing means. The nervous line characteristic of his earlier drawings, was abandoned in favor of a more gestural style applied with great verve. What remains is the inclusion of blank spaces that Kirchner had always used as a stylistic means in is drawings. The depicted person's identity remains uncertain. In 1927 Kirchner made a woodcut portrait of the mine engineer Dr. Robert Goering (Dube 588), which quite resembles the person depicted in this work. [KD].
