A large composition that could not be more simple. As so often with Christian Rohlfs, plain things are increased in meaning through their lavish illustration and shown from a very peculiar artistic angle. By mixing various techniques, here tempera with the wash-outs characteristic of Rohlfs, flanked by layers of color chalk and the brush drawing in brown, Christian Rohlfs attains a masterly visualization of his technical mastery. He doesn’t lose himself in detail. On the contrary, through the harmonization of the colors he merges the things and gives them a homogenous and pictorial effect. [KD].
