The Hamburg harbor motifs occupy a special position among the etchings by Emil Nolde. In terms of the motifs impressive make and the great poise in using aquatint, they are an expression of the artist’s joy in discovering the unusual. The subject’s often gloomy dynamic is directly conveyed through the mastery with which the technique is employed. In these subjects Nolde wrote a piece of history of the Hamburg harbor, which today is nothing like it used to be. [KD].
