Kind mit Musikinstrument. 1911.
Graphite drawing.
Lower right signed and dated, inscribed with the colors "sch[warz]", "br[aun]" and "rot" in the image. Titled on the reverse. On fine wove paper (with truncated watermark). 20.2 x 13.5 cm (7.9 x 5.3 in), size of sheet.
Cf. lithograph of the same name from 1913: Ebner/Gabelmann 601 L. [JS].

• Masterly spontaneous drawing from the "Brücke" heyday.
• Marvelous document of the edgy "Brücke" style: summary accounr of dress, legs, feet and arms with sharp contour lines.
• Heckel's color woodcut "Fränzi stehend" for the 6th annual "Brücke" portfolio - a key work of expressionist graphic, was also made in 1911.
• Heckel presumably also planned to execute a color woodcut after the present drawing, as his notes in the image suggest.
• In 1913 Heckel used the motif for a lithograph (Ebner/Gabelmann 601 L) of which only 3 copies are known
.

The work is registered in the Erich Heckel Estate, Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance. We are grateful to Mrs Renate Ebner and Mr Hans Geissler for the kind support in cataloging this lot.
