• With great ease and spontaneity, Erich Heckel captured the atmosphere of an evening in Italy, allowing the color effect to take precedence over the urban motif.
• Comparably powerful watercolors from Heckel's trip to Italy in 1909, which carry the light of the south, can be found in the Brücke Museum in Berlin.

In his watercolor from 1909, Erich Heckel captured the atmosphere of an evening in Italy with great effortlessness and spontaneity, allowing the color effect to dominate the urban motif. Houses and fountains glow in the warm yellow and orange surrounded by contrasting blue and black, so typical of the works he made in Italy. The motif dissolves almost entirely into the color surfaces without any specific perspective, demonstrating Erich Heckel's early sense of expressive and free use of watercolors.
He remained dedicated to this important technique well into his old age and continued to develop it through various creative phases. For the young artist in particular, watercolor offered the perfect prerequisites needed to achieve the immediacy of expression sought by the "Brücke" artists. Bright, unmixed colors, applied in sweeping brushstrokes and with strong contrasts that determine the composition are considered a special feature of his early watercolors. To this day, they are impressive testimonies to a carefree and boisterous phase in the artist's work. [AR]
