• Portraits play an important role in Heckel's prints of the 1940s.
• The work shows Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) carving a sculpture.
• The time this lithograph was made, Heckel also made print portraits of Otto Dix and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.
