Gedruckt in mehreren Schriftgrößen. - Der aus Kilchoffen bei Freiburg i. Br. stammende Jacobus Philippi (um 1435 bis nach 1510) studierte an der Basler Universtität Theologie und war später als Pfarrer tätig. "Of his activity little is known; but it is evident that he was inclined toward the Brethren of the Common Life, making his will in favor of their house at Zwolle in 1486. He was attracted to the community primarily by his brother Ludwig, who had become one of their number at Zwolle in 1472, and who died there as rector of the Brethren in 1490 ... His chief work was his Reformatorium (first printed at Basel, 1494, not 1444, as a misprint led many to suppose), directed against evils in the life of the clergy. As a remedy Philippi recommended the community of the Brethren of the Common Life. The close of the book admonishes against the misuse of benefices accumulated in the hands of a single holder. In all his reform measures Philippi shows himself in harmony with many of his contemporaries." (New Schaff-Herzog, Bd. IX) - Bedeutung erlangt das Werk auch dadurch, daß sich darin verstreutes biographisches Material über den Verfasser findet. So ist auf Bl. h5 vo. ein Brief Sebastian Brants an den Autor abgedruckt, worin er Phillipi als "insignis ecclesie Bas. plebano" anredet. - Etw. fleckig und tlw. wasserrandig, vereinz. mit Knickspuren, wenige Bll. mit Randläsur; Titel mit erg. Randabschnitt, letztes Bl. mit schmalem erg. Ausschnitt; vereinz. alte Marginalien, Titel mit alten Besitzvermerken. Einbd. bestoßen, Kanten beschabt, Rücken ausgebessert. Breitrandiges Exemplar.Only incunabulum edition, very rare. With woodcut printer's device at end. Early 16th century leather on 4 raised bands, richly blind- and rollstamped, front board with blindpressed title 'REFORM'. 8vo. 99 nn. leaves (lacking final blank). Gothic type, 31 lines and head-line and marginalia. - Some spoiling and dampstaining, here and there creases, marginal defects to few leaves; rebacked cut-out to lower margin of titel and small cut-out to last leaf. Few marginalia, title with old inscriptions. Binding bumped, edges rubbed and spine discreetly repaired. Broadmargined copy.
