Eindrucksvolle Folge mit sehr sorgfältig gedruckten und lebendig vom Künstler kolorierten Holzschnitten. Auch in späteren Jahren beschäftige sich Seewald intensiv mit der Problematik der Bibelillustration. In den späten dreißiger Jahren fertigte Seewald 60 Zeichnungen mit Bibelillustrationen an, die jedoch kriegsbedingt verloren gingen. 1957 erschien dann die Seewald Bilderbibel im Herderverlag, die sich trotz großer Verlagsunterstützung nicht durchsetzen konnte.- "His early style, shown in these woodcuts for the Bible, is rooted in German peasant art. The testament of Jesus does not interest Seewald, but he prefers the passions, myths and eternal flow of archetypes in the Old Testament. Man is hero and man is victum there. To Seewald, the Bible is a great landscape of happenings, people are small in God's landscape, usually grouped, creatures of both paradise and murder, usually unclothed, relating to beast and land, but victimized by war and subernatural. The compositions are balanced between black and white masses. Line is carefully designed for inner movement around the picture plane. Voluptuous and spiritual nature-mixture is combined with easy intimacy of humans and animals" (Reed).
