Newtons Hauptwerk in der lateinischen Übersetzung von Samuel Clarke. "In the Opticks, Newton presented his main discoveries and theories concerning light and color in logical order." (DSB)
Die Opticks hatten großen Einfluß auf die wissenschaftlichen Kreise der damaligen Zeit und Clarkes Übersetzung war weit verbreitet. Auch Kant studierte Clarkes Übersetzung. Vorliegend die dritte lateinische Ausgabe.
EINBAND: Zeitgenössischer Halblederband mit Rückenschild. 25 : 20 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit gestochenem Porträt-Frontispiz, gestochener Titelvignette und 12 gefalteten Kupfertafeln sowie Holzschnittvignetten und -initialen. - KOLLATION: 2 Bll., XXXII, 363 S. - ZUSTAND: Erste und letzte Bll. gebräunt, sonst innen sauber; 1 Taf. seitl. mit Einriß (mit Klebefilm hinterl). Einbd. beschabt und bestoßen. - PROVENIENZ: Titel mit altem Stempel (verblaßt, unleserlich).
