Their mastery of the concentration of pictorial elements and the division of surfaces, coupled with a sure instinct for a pictorial effect, give these sheets a striking impact that is unparalleled in the graphic art of the time. The self-portrait in its strictly formal structure is virtually exemplary of the relationship Heckel created between linear interpretation in dialog with the compact surfaces, which ensures an optical balance in the composition.
