Erste Ausgabe, die bis 1819 in 50 Lieferungen nur für die Subskribenten erschien. In den beiden vorliegenden Bänden wurden die Tafeln in eine neue Reihenfolge gebracht und oben links von Hand neu durchnumeriert, Titelblätter nur zu Bd. I und II vorhanden. - Die dekorativen Tafeln in äußerst sorgfältigem zeitgenössischen Kolorit. Dargestellt ist jeweils ein Vogel auf einem Zweig, Baumstumpf, Stein etc., zum Teil mit landschaftlichem Hintergrund. Zu jeder Tafel ein erläuternder 2- bis vereinz. 8-seitiger Text. Am Ende mit einem Generalregister. - "Their value is to be found in the plates .. these are quite good artistically" (Anker). - "The hand-coloring is delicate and gives the book an artistic, if not scientific, importance" (Zimmer).
EINBAND: Rote Lederbände der Zeit mit Rückenvergoldung, goldgeprägter Deckelfilete, Innenkantenvergoldung und Ganzgoldschnitt. 23,5 : 14,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 244 kolorierten Kupfertafeln. - ZUSTAND: Schwach gebräunt, Text tls. mit leichtem Bildabklatsch, Tafeln von Hand zusätzl numeriert, vereinz. am Seitensteg knapp beschnitten. Einbd. gering fleckig, Kanten tls. berieben, Rücken verfärbt. Insgesamt schönes sauberes Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Wappenexlibris von Edward Dowdeswell of Worcestershire (1841-1893). - Exlibris des amerikanischen Bibliophilen und Sammlers Henry Bradley Martin (1906-1988; verkauft bei Sotheby's, New York, 7 June 1989, lot 76 und später ebenda 7. One of the most popular bird books of its time owing to the quality of the illustrations. First edition, 10 volumes bound in 2, with 244 fine hand-colored engraved plates by and after Donovan, arranged systematically according to their Linnaean orders. Contemp. red straight-grained morocco gilt, rubbed, spines faded, gilt edges. - Titles to volumes III-X and volume indexes discarded. Slightly browned, text partly with slight offsetting, plates additionally numbered by hand, plates partly cropped close at the fore edges. Binding slightly stained and rubbed, spine discolored. Overall a nice clean copy. Bookplate of Edward Dowdeswell of Worcestershire, the Pull Court library label in each volume, the Bradley Martin copy (sale at Sotheby's, New York, 7 June 1989, lot 76),
