Post War Art

The range of offerings in the section of Post War Art was particularly strong. It comprised around 120 ZERO objects that were not only almost entirely sold, but also with excellent increases. Premium works by Uecker, Mack and Piene were accompanied by impressive and acclaimed works by artists such as Fontana, Manzoni, Castellani, Aubertin, Luther, Zangs or Schoonhoven. The auction's top lot with a world-record price was Günther Uecker's work "Hommage à Paul Scheerbart" (starting price: € 300,000 / result: € 1,875,000*), an agravic hovering nail being - surely unique in Uecker's creation.

Nine further top lots by the most valuable ZERO artist were also knocked down with high increases for prices in six-digit realms. The gently moving nail picture "Weißes Feld (Weißer Wind)" from 1991 realized a hammer price of € 525,000* (starting price: € 140,000). Ketterer Kunst established the world-wide price level for the German artist with three auction results beyond the million mark. An overall result of more than one million euro was also achieved by 20 works by each Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. All of Heinz Mack's light reliefs and chromatic color fields realized sharp price increases. Otto Piene's works, created by means of fire, emanate both poetic beauty and power and knew to convince art lovers. The work "Green Fire Flower" was made in 1963 during the heyday of ZERO and is part of the acclaimed "Fire Flowers" series. With a result of € 287,500* (starting price: € 80,000) it was the artist's most expensive work. Lucio Fontana's "Concetto spaziale, Attesa" from 1960 realized twice its starting price and climbed to € 1,500,000*.

The most sought-after works by the Dutchmen Johannes Jan Schoonhoven on the international auction market are his large-size reliefs from the 1960s and early 1970s, of which the hammer price for "Relief 72-73-M-14" from 1973 (starting price: € 140,000 / result: € 450,000*) delivers striking proof. The same amount of € 450,000* was also paid for Enrico Castellani's "Superficie bianca" from 1979 (starting price: € 180,000). Both hammer prices are the highest ever realized for either artist in an auction in Germany.
* The rounded result is the hammer price plus buyer's premium.
