Modern Art

Max Pechstein's vividly colored "Bildnis Charlotte Cuhrt" from the key year 1910, in which Pechstein's Expressionism radically broke loose, was the section's top lot with a hammer price of € 825,000* (starting price: € 400,000). Pechstein's expressive figure composition "Im Freien" also doubled its starting price and realized € 612,500*. Third place in the ranking of top lots is occupied by Alexej von Jawlensky's work "Untitled, Fragment (Stillleben mit grünem Reiter)" from the artist's important early period of creation around 1908/09, which was knocked down at € 500,000* (starting price: € 280,000). A few years ago the preliminary study for the painting "Stillleben mit weißem Pferd" from 1912 was discovered under the gray coat of paint on rear of the painting "Teller mit Äpfeln", which was also called up in this auction.

Excellent art despite a generally bemoaned lack of supply in this section – particularly works by Karl Hofer were expected with great suspense and made for remarkable results, among them the "Porträt von zwei jungen Frauen" (starting price: € 100,000 / result: € 300,000*) and the work "Drei Mädchen" (starting price: € 100,000 / result: € 275,000*). Gabriele Münter's exceptional still life "Blaue Blume (Narzissen mit Zinerarie)" from the Blaue Reiter's triumphant year 1912 was likewise successful. Next to Emil Nolde and Egon Schiele, works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Lyonel Feininger and Oskar Schlemmer also enthused art lovers.

The auction of Modern Art brought forth a new world record price for a work by Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen. The expressive painting "Überredung" from her best period of creation was knocked down for € 212,500* (starting price: € 60,000). Accordingly, Ketterer Kunst has sold the artist's five most expensive works to date world-wide.
* The rounded result is the hammer price plus buyer's premium.
