• The circus is a main theme in Chagall's oeuvre.
• With the series "Der Zirkus" the artist fulfilled a wish of the art trader Ambroise Vollard.
• The year this work was made two grand retrospectives in Cologne and Zürich honored the artist on occasion of his 80th birthday.
• Chagall's works are on display at, among others, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, or the Art Institute of Chicago.
