Dampfer (Groß hell). 1910.
Etching.
Signed. Titled in the lower margin, presumably by a hand other than that of the artist. One of at least 25 copies. On delicate creme laid paper by Van Gelder Zonen (with the watermark). 31 x 41 cm (12.2 x 16.1 in). Sheeet: 45 x 59,5 cm (17,7 x 23,4 in).
Printed by Genthe, Hamburg and Sabo, Berlin. [JS].
• Fascinating minimalist composition in a large format.
• Nolde lets the steamer glide past the horizon in moving, reduced strokes.
• The steam rising from the chimney and the undulating movement of the water merge into moving lines.
• Rare. To date, only 7 copies of this etching have been offered on the international auction market (source: artprice com).
• From the Deutsche Bank Collection.
Accompanied by a photo confirmation issued by Prof. Dr. Martin Urban, Nolde Foundation Sebüll from March 9, 1994 (in copy).
PROVENANCE: Deutsche Bank Collection, Frankfurt a. M.
LITERATURE: Gustav Schiefler, Christel Mosel, Martin Urban, Emil Nolde – Das graphische Werk, vol. I: Die Radierungen, Cologne 1995, no. 134.
Good overall impression. Slightly irregularly browned and light-stained. Upper left corner and left edge with professionally closed and filled paper losses. With very few, minimally foxed spots.
