Kerze I. 1988.
Offset in colors.
Signed. From an edition of 260 copies. On offset paper. 89.3 x 94.5 cm (35.1 x 37.2 in), the full sheet.
Based on the oil painting “Kerze” (Candle) from 1982, albeit inverted. Richter originally used the motif for the poster of his solo exhibition at the Mönchehaus Museum of Modern Art in Goslar in 1988. Instead of the white printed writing, a large handwritten signature was now placed across the sheet. Published by the Verein zur Förderung moderner Kunst e. V. (at the Mönchehaus Museum of Modern Art), Goslar. [JS].
• Inspired by Richter's famous painting “Kerze” (1982).
• His paintings, “Kerze” (1982) and “Betty” (1988), are considered icons of the 20th century.
• For 21 years, Richter has been ranked as the world's most important artist by Art Compass.
• Gerhard Richter's works can be found in leading international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Modern, London.
LITERATURE: Hubertus Butin, Gerhard Richter. Editionen 1965-2013, Cologne 2014, no. 64 (illustration of a different copy).
In good condition. Corners with isolated slight creasing and compression marks, as well as a small tear in the upper left sheet edge (c. 1 cm). Lower edge minimally bumped in places and with a tiny tear (c. 0.4 cm). Paper slightly wavy in the upper area and with mounting points verso of the upper edge, minimally showing through to recto in places.
