Blick von Urfeld auf den Walchensee. Um 1920/25.
Good overall impression. Evenly discoloured. Barely noticeable smoothed vertical and horizontal folds. The plate has probably been folded.
Watercolour.
Signed lower right. On brownish cardboard. 29,5 : 32,2 cm (11,6 : 12,6 in), the full sheet. When Corinth bought a lakeside property at Urfeld on Walchensee, he had a good vantage-point for discovering the Bavarian Alpine scenery. The Walchensee pictures he proceeded to paint there were acclaimed by the public. Good reason to withdraw from Berlin and spend more time in the quiet of his Bavarian mountain retreat. The loosening of his brushwork that Corinth had been working towards now reached its zenith, never to attain such heights again. Much has been said in this connection of a sort of Expressionism that Corinth is supposed to have striven for. However, it is far more than that since the style of those years was a consistent development of what had gone before. Our watercolour with its fleeting, vehemently gestural handling expresses a concentration on essentials. [KD]
