1887 Aachen - 1965 Büderich bei Neuss
Zeichen eines Pferdes. 1945.
Bronze with slight patina.
Schilling 275 a. With monogram on verso. One of 3 copies. 9,5 x 9 x 4,5 cm (3,7 x 3,5 x 1,7 in).
PROVENANCE: Private collection South Germany (acquired directly from artist).
LITERATURE: Moderne deutsche Kunst seit 1933, Kunsthalle Bern 1947, no. 179 (different copy).
Ewald Mataré. Plastiken, Kunsthandwerk, Handzeichnungen, Aquarelle, Graphik, Städtische Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf 1967, no. 58 (there with the title "Kleines rundes Pferd") (different copy).
Completeness of form is a key concern in Ewald Mataré’s animal sculpture, to which all elements, including abstraction, are subordinated. The symbolic content of expression is heightened by simplified cubic forms; the individual aspect has been foregone to work out an animal figure that can be viewed as a metaphor for an entire genre, as it were. Mataré, however, has bound all this into his distinctive aesthetic grounded in cogent and coherent form. [KD].
In good condition.
