Collijn II, 210-214 (mit Abb.). - Adams M 136. - Mortimer 269 (Variante). - Erste Ausgabe der ersten schwedischen Nationalgeschichte, hier die Druckvariante mit Wappenholzschnitt auf dem Titel und Widmung an Papst Julius III. - Bedeutendes und typographisch ansprechend gesetztes Werk des Johannes Magnus, der 1526 vor der Reformation nach Rom geflohen war. Mit der berühmten Skandinavienkarte seines Bruders Olaus Magnus, einer Reduktion des 1539 erschienenen Originals (vgl. Nordenskiöld 60f.). - Titel etw. beschnitten und aufgezogen. Gegen Ende mit wenigen Wurmlöchern (letzte Bll. mehr), letzte 10 Bll. wasserrandig, 3 Bll. mit Randeinriß, 1 Bl. mit Eckabriß. Einband stellenw. restauriert (Ecken und Gelenke), Schließen und Vorsätze erneuert. Exlibris. - Insgesamt gutes und breitrandiges Exemplar.
First edition of the first national history of Sweden, also important for Russia and the rest of Scandinavia. Printing variant with coat of arms on title and dedication to pope Julius III. - Fine printing with Roman types, woodcut coat of arms on title, 1 fullpage woodcut map of Scandinavia (reduction of the famous map by Olaus Magnus, brother of Johannes M.), 2 fine woodcut printer's devices (rep.), 472 woodcuts in text (rep.) and numerous fine woodcut fig. initials. Contemp. blindtooled calf over wooden boards on raised band (partly restored) with later label on spine and new clasps. - Title slightly cut and mounted. Few wormholes towards end (last leaves more obvious), last 10 leaves waterstained, 3 leaves with marginal tear, 1 corner torn off. Bookplate. Else well preserved copy with broad margins.
