The archaic element of the array of forms in Ewald Mataré’s animal sculptures is a principle characteristic of his artistic will. The reduction of forms to an elementary level is also the attempt to approach the primal form. It is therefore that the small zinc cow with geometrical ornaments is reminiscent of primeval depictions of animals. The elementary is also the creatural. This is what Mataré pursues and depicts his congenial way in his plastics of animals. Even though he creates the topos, the original form, his works are unmistakable, when regarded in the context of the artistic creation of his days. [KD]
