Published by Verlag R. Piper & Co., Munich, presumably in 1922. The numbering of the 30s edition within thee complete print run of 100 copies was executed by durch Günther Franke.
If self-portraits are supposed to be above questioning of the self confined to reproducing likenesses, this 1918 etched Max Beckmann self-portait is an outstanding example of that more subtle approach. The artist’s critical view of himself here becomes a holistic study of his person. No one could look more doubtful yet so strong-willed than Beckmann does in this vigorous self-portrait. Everything is exposed: the strains to the psyche incurred in a war only recently ended, which represents the end of an era but also the firm resolve to continue what has begun despite all possible doubts. Beckmann’s psychogram of himself is indeed revealing. Art is at its most searching when it shows itself aware of its power and dignity. [KD].
