Burlesque Show, New York. 1932.
Wash India ink and Reed pen drawing.
Signed lower right. On thin paper (with watermark). 52,2 x 40,2 cm (20,5 x 15,8 in), size of sheet.

This work will be included into the forthcoming œuvre catalog of works on paper, which is currently prepared by Ralph Jentsch, Rome.

PROVENANCE: Estate Fred Howard, New York.

The year the sheet "Burlesque Show, New York“ was made George Grosz was guest lecturer at the "Art Students League“ in New York. A year later, in 1933, the artist finally decided to move to the metropolis. Ostracized in Germany, his works were removed from museums, some where shown in the exhibition "Degenerate Art“ in 1937. In 1954 Grosz returned to Germany for a longer time. This drawing lives on bitingness and a tendency towards both erotic and ugliness - characteristics that made Grosz a brilliant satiric drawer that went down in art history. [KH].
